Intel Fab 11X

Project Description:

This was the new 300mm semiconductor facility that the Intel Corporation built in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The addition of this plant made Fab 11 the largest computer chip manufacturing plant in the world. The project involved the retrofit of existing systems in both the “Central Utilities Building” and “Fab 11 South” as well as, the construction of the new Fab. The Intel Corporation broke ground on the project in November of 2000. The “Base build” scope of work continued, on the 208,000 square foot of class 1 clean room space, though July of 2002. However, the first tool set occurred in August of 2001.

Modification of existing central utilities building to allow for the Fab 11X expansion. This modification included installation of chillers, boilers, and UPW/DI equipment and all related ancillary equipment and piping.
Modification of two existing sort facilities. This included the removal and reinstallation of supply air systems, process vacuum, OFA, and process cooling water mains. It also encompassed the retrofit of existing HEPA filters and raised metal flooring.
Modification of existing HPM rooms. This retrofit took the HPM room and turned the area into a facilities basement to support the tools that were installed in the actual factory.
Installation of a reclaim water system. We modified existing and installed new piping to accommodate the reclamation of the factories water.

Unique Technical Challenges Related to Project

The major challenge on this project was the coordination of trades that been individually contracted to perform work
on the project.
Each firm was able to successfully communicate which in turn allowed the project to be completed on time and under budget.
